Let's start the show.

0:48

How amazing was the Kylie documentary?

0:51

Oh my god, as a lifelong Kylie fan, this

0:54

week has just been the best week ever.

0:57

Yeah, when we watched the documentary and we spoke about how much nostalgia

1:05

Yeah, for anybody who hasn't seen it or has been living under a

Now, we watched it last night, back-to-back.

Kylie years, and that is absolutely our childhood, eh?

1:42

It was so good that I stayed up past my bedtime.

1:45

2:11

And then there was a little cameo from Jason

2:13

2:15

But can I just say, he came across like a bitter old man.

2:18

Oh, no.

2:20

Okay.

2:28

Okay, if you say so, but that's not the impression I was getting.

2:32

I don't think there's any bitterness there.

2:34

I loved, so when they did the premiere for the docuseries,

2:38

and they had the red carpet event, there's a really beautiful

2:42

photo that came from it, and it's Kylie Minogue and Jason

2:44

27:08

Right.

27:09

From the Queen of Pop, let's move on to something a little

27:13

more serious, and this is something affecting transgender people in the UK.

27:17

So, after quite a long wait, the EHRC has finally published

27:23

its guidance on single-sex spaces, following the Supreme Court ruling.

27:30

And the UK government are being very guarded about it,

27:32

and not really giving, like, charities or organisations enough time.

27:36

It's making it really difficult.

27:37

Yeah, this guidance was supposed to give clarity, and I

27:41

don't think anybody feels that it gives clarity whatsoever.

27:45

It is just an absolute mess.

27:48

Yeah, so basically they've issued a new 340-page draft code

27:52

of practice, and it applies to England, Scotland, and Wales.

27:56

And under the guidance, single-sex spaces, including public

27:59

toilets, changing rooms, and hospital wards, must exclude

28:02

transgender people based on their gender identity.

28:05

So we're going back rather than going forward, unfortunately.

28:09

A lot of this guidance was worked up under the previous chair of

28:13

the EHRC, Baroness Faulkner, who, since she left the organisation, she has given

28:21

quite a few interviews and she's said quite a few things that make

28:24

it absolutely beyond doubt that she is a rotten transphobe.

28:28

She should never, like, never have been put into that position.

28:32

She was put in by the previous Tory government and she

28:36

was not fit for the role because of her rabid transphobia.

28:40

So we're already starting from that place.

28:43

The new chair that took over last year, who was appointed by

28:46

the Labour government, that is Mary-Ann Stephenson, she was appointed despite the

28:52

fact that both the Women and Equalities Committee and the Joint Committee

28:57

on Human Rights, in the Houses of Parliament, had both raised objections

29:02

about her appointment, stating that her experience was not sufficient.

29:07

And there were quite a lot of LGBT voices that spoke at that

29:12

time to suggest that Mary-Ann Stephenson had some links to transphobic organisations.

29:20

How can that be impartial?

29:22

It's just unbelievable.

29:24

Yeah.

29:25

The whole thing is, it absolutely stinks to high heaven.

29:28

It really does.

29:30

And there's a trans rights group, Trans Actual, and they've strongly condemned

29:34

the draft, saying that it's rolling back existing protections, so actually

29:38

things are worse for trans people after this has been released.

29:41

And they criticise the government for a lack

29:44

of transparency and engagement with the community.

29:47

So the UK government, once this has been released,

29:50

aren't even contacting or working with trans rights groups.

29:55

Yeah. Because they just want to force it through.

29:57

And let's face it, it's not just trans

29:59

rights groups that they need to engage with.

30:01

This will impact so many other people.

30:05

There are a lot of cisgender women who are going to be impacted by this.

30:10

So although the draft guidance says that people should not

30:13

be routinely challenged in single-sex facilities, it does say that

30:17

where there are concerns raised about somebody's appearance or behaviour,

30:22

that it is appropriate to challenge them.

30:25

But, I mean, what qualifies somebody to

Is it because they're not feminine enough?

30:32

Is it because they don't conform by

30:34

wearing what's considered to be feminine clothing?

30:38

Is it somebody who is bald?

30:40

So, for instance, does somebody who's going through chemotherapy

30:44

have to worry about being challenged in women's toilets?

30:48

What about if somebody, a cisgender woman, is quite tall?

30:53

Does she have to worry about being challenged in toilets?

30:56

What if a cisgender woman has a deep voice?

30:59

What if a cisgender woman has Polycystic Ovary

31:02

Syndrome and perhaps has some facial hair?

31:04

Does she have to worry?

31:05

I mean, this is, it's actually quite misogynist policy because

31:11

it almost will force women to have to adopt to

31:15

these ridiculous standards of what a woman should be.

31:19

31:27

31:29

Duh.

31:43

It's just shocking.

31:44

And it provides no clarity.

31:47

There's nothing there.

31:48

That's wishy-washy.

31:49

And what's to stop a cisgender man pretending to be a trans man

31:55

to go into a women's bathroom because that's what the rules are saying?

31:59

You have to go to the bathroom or the facility that

32:03

you have been the sex that you've been assigned at birth.

32:05

Exactly.

32:06

And it puts trans men in a really awful position as well.

32:11

I mean, it puts them in a dangerous position because if an

32:14

aggressive cisgender man sees what they see as a man going into

32:19

the women's toilets, what's to say that they won't go in and

32:22

drag them out and beat them up or something?

32:25

It's so dangerous.

32:27

And again, these transphobes view transgender men as biological women.

32:34

That's what they want to call them.

32:37

It's really horrible that they do that,

32:38

but how is that protecting them then?

32:41

They say that they want to protect what they call biological women.

32:44

How is that protecting that person?

32:45

It's not. It's putting them in danger.

32:47

Yeah, it's shocking.

32:49

And it's so sad to see that things

32:51

are being rolled back rather than moving forward.

32:53

In real stock contrast, there's a huge news story in the UK at the

32:57

moment, and it's about those two young guys who were found guilty of rape.

33:02

They recorded themselves raping a young girl, and they've

33:08

got off without a prison sentence, because the judge

33:11

thought that they didn't deserve a prison sentence.

33:14

I think for me, it's just that all of this focus, all of this emphasis

33:19

on where transgender people can piss, and it so has taken away from what the

33:27

actual danger for women and girls is, like, that should be our focus.

33:32

But instead, there's just so many newspaper columns, so

33:36

33:40

of trans people going for a piss somewhere.

33:43

Yeah, it's shocking.

33:45

33:46

Now, the fight isn't over because India Willoughby, who's a trans activist,

33:50

has said that trans people may have lost the crazy battle of

33:53

the bogs, but we haven't lost the war, and Europe beckons.

33:57

And basically, the piece which is in Attitude magazine is

34:01

saying it will go to the European courts, and then

34:05

hopefully there'll be some positive outcomes from that.

34:08

34:09

Let's face it, all of our equalities and advancements

34:12

34:15

this is probably where we're heading with this now.

34:18

34:46

So our last section is the fitness section.

34:48

And this week we have a little bit of

34:50

a focus on nutrition and in particular protein.

34:53

Yeah. So protein targets for a lot of people are quite hard to meet.

34:57

And obviously there's a cost of the living crisis at the minute as well.

35:00

So what we've come up with is how to meet your

35:03

protein intake without it costing an arm and a leg.

35:05

I did a little bit of research yesterday and you know I love a spreadsheet.

35:10

You do love a spreadsheet.

35:11

I do love a spreadsheet.

35:12

So I went on to Tesco's website.

35:15

I looked at lots of different products and

35:18

the nutritional info and how much it costs.

35:20

And I created a spreadsheet which calculates what the price of

35:25

100 grams of protein would be for each food source.

35:29

So it kind of breaks it down for what the cheapest sources are.

35:33

Caveats to this are: doesn't include the cost of cooking.

35:37

It is just purely what the protein source is.

35:40

We're going to include plant-based and animal products in the section.

35:43

Prices are based on Tesco's website, which is from the 23rd of May, 2026.

35:49

And some of these are also current Clubcard prices as well.

35:52

And some of the foods will be high in carb content, and

35:55

you'd need to eat a lot to get a high protein intake.

35:58

So yeah, just to emphasise again, we're just

36:01

talking about purely what the protein is.

36:03

Starting off at the very cheapest that I could

36:06

find, this might surprise some people, but it is

36:10

Tesco's cheap pasta, the Hearty Food Co spaghetti pasta.

36:15

Per 100 grams, there's actually 12.5

36:19

grams of protein in the pasta.

36:21

Now, when people think of protein sources, they generally don't think of

36:25

things like pasta, but yeah, there is quite a lot there.

36:28

So that works out at 45 pence per 100 grams of protein.

36:34

And see, to be honest, like 100 grams

36:37

of spaghetti is actually a decent meal.

36:39

You know, like we would normally have like 75 grams, 100

36:42

grams of pasta when we're having like a pasta dish.

36:45

So that is so cheap for 12.5

36:47

grams of protein.

36:48

Moving forward, a lot of this, then, at

36:51

the cheaper end of the scale, is plant-based.

36:54

In case you don't know, Derec and I are plant-based.

36:56

For us, this is a bit of a no-brainer.

36:58

That is not to say, though, as we move down

37:00

the list, you'll see not all plant-based sources are cheap.

37:03

No.

37:04

Tofu, you little shit!

37:05

Yeah.

37:06

But, lentils, chickpeas, all really, really cheap here.

37:12

Red split lentils, 58 pence per 100 grams of protein.

37:17

Perhaps if you make a bolognese, why don't

37:20

you add some lentils to the bolognese?

37:22

It'll increase the amount of protein in the dish really cheaply.

37:26

The chickpeas, dried chickpeas, 71 pence per 100 grams of protein.

37:30

Now, and this is a little tip, the world food aisle is your friend.

37:35

It's your best friend for this stuff.

37:37

This is where you would find quite a lot of Indian food and world cuisines.

37:42

It's the aisle in Tesco where they sell the massive bags of rice.

37:46

That is so good.

37:47

They do some brands there where you can buy lentils, chickpeas, other

37:52

dried beans, things like that, and it is really good value.

37:55

So the lentils that I've quoted there, it's the Laila red split lentils, the

38:00

dried ones, and they work out at 58 pence for 100 grams of protein.

38:06

You make a really mean dahl using red split lentils.

38:11

Do you know what?

38:12

See, when you were doing this research and we were talking about

38:15

lentils, and I was like, we've not had a dahl in ages.

38:17

I don't think we've had a dahl, a homemade dahl since we moved

38:20

here, so I was thinking we need to get back into that.

38:22

You make us one tonight, then.

38:24

No.

38:24

Another benefit of these plant-based protein sources at the bottom of this list

38:30

is that they generally tend to be quite high in fibre as well.

38:33

We've talked to death about fibre on this show, but especially for, if you

38:38

are a guy who bottoms and you want to increase your fibre intake for

38:42

that reason, or in general, for other health reasons, if you want to increase

38:46

your fibre intake, this is a really good way of doing both.

38:49

You can get fibre and protein from one food source.

38:52

We call that a win-win.

38:53

A win-win without a wipe-wipe.

38:56

Wow.

38:57

Other things here, like green lentils, 77 pence per 100 grams of protein.

39:01

Porridge oats.

39:02

Brilliant.

39:03

There's 11 grams of protein per 100 grams of porridge oats, which works

39:08

out as 77 pence per 100 grams of protein of that food source.

39:11

Now, obviously, you're not going to have 100

39:14

grams of oats, because that's quite a lot.

39:16

So, like, we make overnight oats, and I would have 50 grams.

39:19

So, if you think about it over the week, you know, and we

39:22

speak about, like, your calorie goals and macro goals, it's a weekly target.

39:27

So, you're getting a not bad amount

39:29

of protein over two days there, basically.

39:31

So, again, we're going up the list, like, dried kidney beans, really cheap.

39:35

Another one, so this is something that's in the world foods aisle.

39:38

This comes in next.

39:40

It works out as £1 per 100 grams of protein.

39:44

It has got 21 grams of protein per 100 grams.

39:47

So, not a lot of people will know, might

39:51

know what this is, but it's Besan gram flour.

39:54

It is a flour that is made from milled

39:57

lentils and chickpeas, and it's really, really good.

40:01

We used to use it to make, like, a plant-based Spanish tortilla.

40:07

So, we had this recipe for it, and it was

40:09

really good for that, and it's super high in protein.

40:13

It's really, really cheap, and there are quite a few recipes out

40:16

there for things that you can make with it, or you can

40:18

substitute it for ordinary flour, or, like, a really high-protein alternative.

40:23

I'm just going to jump in and say you've not made that in a while.

40:25

Okay, I think I need to make that, given that we now live in Spain.

40:29

I definitely need to make that.

40:30

So, moving on, we have got peanut-based products.

40:33

So, the first one is the Tesco own-brand smooth peanut butter.

40:36

That works out as £1.34 per 100 grams of protein, and also in the world

40:41

food aisle, the Asani red skin peanut kernels, and that works out as £1.40

40:47

per 100 grams of protein.

40:50

For both the peanut butter and the peanut kernels,

40:52

around about a quarter of their content is protein.

40:55

Yeah, peanuts are a good source of protein, but obviously you

40:58

need to be aware of the fat content as well.

41:01

So, if you're keeping an eye on your macros, just be aware of that.

41:04

So, moving on, I don't think we need to go too far into this

41:08

list, but we are getting into where animal products start coming in now.

41:12

The cheapest, the very, very cheapest animal source of protein

41:16

that I could find was Frozen Butcher's Choice Chicken Fillets.

41:21

They are £1.52

41:24

pence per 100 grams of protein.

41:26

Pretty decent, and obviously they're high in protein, 27.9g

41:30

of protein per 100 grams, you know, chicken. Chicken's chicken.

41:35

So, moving on down, again, frozen seems to be good

41:37

value because there's the Bay Fishmonger's white fish fillets.

41:41

They come in at £2.09

41:42

per 100 grams, and then we get into some

41:45

tinned stuff as well, so like tinned tuna,

41:48

which most people would think of as pretty cheap.

41:50

That is £2.32

41:51

per 100 grams of protein.

41:53

And a little caveat on that as well, just remember if you're buying one that's

41:57

got sunflower oil in it, just be aware it's going to be higher in fat,

42:01

so we'd always recommend maybe to go for one that's in spring water.

42:04

Definitely, which that one is actually.

42:06

Actually, what becomes a bit more expensive than that are beans.

42:10

Now, the prices that we quoted earlier were for dried beans and pulses.

42:14

These ones are tinned.

42:16

So, tinned kidney beans, tinned chickpeas, they come in at £2.39

42:20

and £2.40

42:21

per 100 grams of protein.

42:23

And it's probably because they're cooked.

42:25

That's probably why they're more expensive, because obviously they've had

42:28

an extra process that they're having to charge for.

42:30

Yeah, really good source of protein.

42:32

However, the benefit of that is that you're going to reduce your

42:35

food waste as well, because they are tinned, because they're long life.

42:38

There are other things here, like for instance, the next

42:41

thing on the list is chicken mince, which is £2.63,

42:45

but that can expire

42:46

quite quickly in your fridge, so there is always

42:50

the element of food waste with some of this stuff, whereas you

42:52

don't get that with tinned and dried products quite so much.

42:55

Okay, why don't we jump to the most expensive one?

42:58

Because some people might be shocked by this.

43:00

So, this is actually not the most expensive.

43:01

I did not put the most expensive on the list, because it was too expensive.

43:04

You're like, I'm not made of money.

43:07

I know.

43:07

So, honestly, I didn't include lamb on

43:10

this, because lamb was ridiculously expensive.

43:13

Up at the top of the list is actually beef.

43:15

£5.62

43:16

per 100 grams.

43:18

Not far off it, though.

43:19

Just below that, actually, surprisingly, is tofu.

43:22

To be fair, so when we lived in Glasgow, we used to

43:25

eat a lot of tofu and tempeh and things like that, which

43:29

are really good sources of protein, but they are expensive.

43:32

And it's £4.04

43:34

per 100 grams of protein.

43:36

So, if you're looking for an alternative protein source,

43:39

tofu is actually really good, and it's probably in

43:41

line with maybe what you're spending at the moment.

43:45

So, if you do want to try

43:46

something different, then that's a good option.

43:48

Yeah. And generally, tofu is a little longer life than meat as well.

43:53

So, again, less food waste from it.

43:55

It's also quite an easy thing to digest.

43:58

Yes.

43:59

And if you're stuck on how to cook it, which a lot of

44:02

people are, because we were at the start, give us a shout, because

44:05

we have loads of recipes that we could send over to you.

44:08

Yeah.

44:09

But what we'll do as well is, during the week, on our

44:11

social media, we'll put out a little informational carousel with some of

44:15

these details of the price of different protein sources, so that you

44:19

can see for yourself and you can check it out.

44:21

So, yeah, that's a little rundown of some protein sources.

44:25

So, if you are looking to increase your protein intake

44:29

without it costing an arm and a leg during the

44:31

cost of living crisis, there's some few pointers for you.

44:35

Yes.

44:36

And give us a shout.
