Hello, and welcome to The Outlifting Lounge.

0:07

This is the show that's all about pride, health and fitness, and everything in between.

0:12

I'm Derec.

0:13

I'm Alan.

0:14

And thank you so much for joining us for our very first episode of The Outlifting Lounge.

0:19

So, Alan, what are we going to be talking about today?

0:22

We're going to be talking about what we're watching on the telly just now.

0:25

We should probably touch as well on some of the news stories that are affecting the LGBT

0:30

community at the minute.

0:31

And I guess, since we're fitness coaches, we'd better talk about some health and fitness

0:35

stuff as well.

0:36

Yeah, sounds good.

0:37

Yeah.

0:38

I suppose, though, because this is episode one, it might be a good idea for us to

0:42

introduce ourselves and tell a bit about ourselves so that people know who we are

0:46

and what we're about.

0:47

Yes.

0:48

So, first up, we are, and I would hope that you know this already, but we are

0:52

a married couple.

0:53

What?

0:54

Are we?

0:55

A happily married couple.

0:56

Happily married couple.

0:57

Should we be talking about that time in the Gorbals when somebody asked if we were

1:02

brothers and Derec pointed to his rainbow wristband?

1:05

Wait, no, we're married.

1:07

Because that means you're married, apparently.

1:10

Do you know what?

1:11

It was such an embarrassing thing that I actually changed my rainbow wristband.

1:15

I don't wear it anymore just because I probably will do that again.

1:19

But it is quite an easy thing to do to point to your watch strap instead of your

1:23

wedding ring.

1:24

Is it?

1:25

I'm pretty sure there's somebody else that's done it.

1:27

Okay.

1:28

If you have that, let us know.

1:32

Thanks for getting that out.

1:33

I'm going to spend the rest of this podcast thinking about embarrassing stories I can

1:37

tell it about you.

1:38

So, yeah, we're a married couple.

1:41

And last year, we decided to start a brand new life together.

1:45

So we sold practically everything we owned.

1:48

Whatever we didn't sell, we put into our car, including our dog.

1:52

Yes.

1:53

Haggis.

1:54

He will make an appearance at one point.

1:55

He's upstairs sleeping just now.

1:56

Yeah.

1:57

We packed everything in the car, including Haggis.

1:59

And we drove.

2:00

We drove for nine days, including two ferries.

2:03

Yes.

2:04

You can drive from Glasgow to Gran Canaria if you ever want to do that.

2:08

Probably don't advise it because it takes quite a while, but you can do it.

2:11

It was.

2:12

It was quite an adventure, though.

2:13

It was magical.

2:14

We got to see quite a lot of Spain.

2:15

We did, yes.

2:16

That was really nice.

2:17

And then, yes, we drove all the way from Glasgow to Gran Canaria.

2:20

And we are here where this podcast is being filmed from today in sunny Masplomas in Gran

2:26

Canaria.

2:27

Yes.

2:28

We've been here now a year and a half, which is just crazy.

2:30

That is.

2:31

We're just about to have our second Christmas here.

2:33

But even better, our second Winter Pride.

2:35

Yes.

2:36

Yeah.

2:37

We'll talk a wee bit about that later.

2:38

We're very excited about Winter Pride coming up.

2:39

And as if we don't spend enough time together, we decided in January to launch Outlifting,

2:43

which is a queer fitness business to help gay, bi, and trans men transform their

2:48

bodies, their minds and their confidence.

2:51

And what better place to do it than the gay capital of Europe?

2:55

Yeah.

2:56

And I think the experience of doing that and working with so many different guys,

3:00

helping them overcome their obstacles and get really fit.

3:03

It's not just about getting fit.

3:05

It's about being happy and confident in your own skin.

3:08

And seeing that transformation in so many guys, it has been incredible.

3:12

But it's what spurred us on to launch this podcast so that we can reach more

3:17

guys out there who might benefit from the eventual health and nutrition and

3:22

fitness tips that we're going to give after we get through all of the chat.

3:27

Yes.

3:29

So this podcast is going out on Sunday, the 26th of October, 2025.

3:34

Have you put your clocks back?

3:36

I hope you have.

3:37

Yeah.

3:38

Alan gets really paranoid every time that the clocks change because he is a bit

3:44

old fashioned and thinks that all of the clocks in the house need to be manually

3:48

changed.

3:49

But it's not really like that anymore, is it?

3:51

Yeah.

3:52

It had to change the oven.

3:53

Well, you changed the oven.

3:55

I changed that.

3:56

I had to change the time on the mic...

3:57

I was going to say microphone.

3:58

Microwave.

3:59

Okay.

4:00

But our phones obviously do that automatically.

4:01

Yeah.

4:02

I think the car, the car, I think the car changed itself at all.

4:05

Didn't notice actually.

4:06

I need to go and check that.

4:07

Anyway, that's that done.

4:08

I unfortunately did not get an extra hour of sleep in bed last night because my

4:12

body clock woke me up an hour earlier.

4:14

Haggis was very happy about that though, because you still get out at normal time.

4:18

True.

4:19

I am not.

4:20

I am very, very tired today because I've not really been sleeping very well recently

4:24

and I was hoping for that.

4:27

I was really wanting that extra hour of sleep.

4:29

It was nice and light this morning.

4:31

It's been dark.

4:32

I've been taking Haggis out, although I'm not looking forward to tonight when

4:35

it's going to be dark at like half six.

4:38

No.

4:39

No.

4:40

I feel sorry for anybody listening to this in the UK when it's going to be dark

4:43

at half four.

4:44

Yeah.

4:45

Sorry about that.

4:46

This is definitely the time of year where I feel very smug and very happy

4:50

about the fact that I don't live so far north anymore.

4:53

Yes.

4:54

Because during the winter here, I think we get, we get more hours,

4:57

quite a few more hours of daylight and it does make a difference.

5:01

Yeah.

5:02

It really makes a difference.

5:03

Absolutely.

5:04

Makes me happier.

5:05

Longer on the beach.

5:07

Yes.

5:09

Not everybody's going to switch off because they're going to be so sick of

5:13

four of us on the beach all the time.

5:15

Right.

5:16

Let's talk about Traitors.

5:18

If you're from the UK or Ireland,

5:21

you're probably watching Celebrity Traitors UK at the minute.

5:25

If you're not from there and you're not watching it,

5:28

you are absolutely missing out.

5:30

Yeah.

5:31

And also, spoiler alert, maybe if we give anything away.

5:34

I don't think we will, but just put that out there because you know what

5:37

it's like when you get spoilers.

5:38

Yeah, definitely.

5:39

I don't think we'll give away who has not given the boot.

5:42

You've got loose lips sometimes.

5:44

Loose lips.

5:45

Very tight hips though, unfortunately.

5:47

I definitely need to stretch more.

5:49

It's old age.

5:51

It is old age.

5:53

I've started to creak.

5:55

Never mind moisturiser,

5:56

I think I need WD40.

5:58

So yeah, we have been watching quite a bit of Celebrity Traitors,

6:02

which is really, really good.

6:03

I think my favourite thing about this series of the Traitors is

6:06

how many memes have been born out of this one series.

6:12

And we're only like six episodes in.

6:13

I know.

6:14

It has been pretty good for that.

6:16

I mean, Alan Carr, icon, Tom Daley and his side eye, icon.

6:22

Tom Daley's side eye is just,

6:25

I think I've probably sent it to you on WhatsApp several many times.

6:29

Yes.

6:30

And can I just say if you've never done that in your life,

6:32

are you even gay?

6:36

Alan with his little lantern.

6:38

Were you going to put the bins out on bin day?

6:41

Or were you forgot to put the bins out on bin day?

6:45

That image of Alan Carr lives rent free in my head.

6:49

Honestly, I see it constantly everywhere.

6:51

And that'll be us now that the clocks have changed and it's getting dark earlier.

6:54

We will be doing that all the time with our phone lights.

6:57

Thinking that we're Alan Carr.

6:58

Although, as much as I'm loving it,

7:01

I'm really, really annoyed that they haven't caught a traitor yet.

7:05

That was a spoiler.

7:08

I don't know.

7:09

I think it's made the game interesting because it's not like other seasons.

7:13

So obviously we are absolute Traitors fans.

7:17

We've watched all of the UK Traitors, civilian seasons, American.

7:23

Yes, we've watched all the American seasons.

7:25

We've watched the Irish version, which is brilliant.

7:29

And that's going to be added to BBC iPlayer.

7:31

So if anybody in the UK hasn't seen that,

7:33

that will be on iPlayer soon.

7:36

We've also watched Australia.

7:38

Oh, yeah, we watched the Australian one.

7:40

Two seasons of that.

7:41

We watched the first season of the New Zealand one.

7:44

Yes.

7:45

And we've got the Spanish one to watch as well.

7:48

And Canada.

7:49

Oh, yeah. Oh, God. We've watched a lot.

7:51

We actually do something like lots more things other than watch TV, by the way.

7:55

I do. We are traitors obsessives.

7:57

So we watch it constantly.

7:59

I quite like when they encounter a first on Traitors.

8:04

So obviously I think Australia season two was the one where the finale was like

8:10

something happened that has never happened before on any of the other seasons that we watch.

8:14

And in this season of Celebrity Traitors, they had a draw at the round table

8:19

and they voted again and it was still a draw.

8:21

So they had to get rid of somebody by chance.

8:24

Spoiler alert number two.

8:26

Yeah. So that was that was quite cool.

8:28

That was fun. That was quite tense.

8:29

Yes, it was good.

8:31

Still very annoyed that they haven't got a traitor yet.

8:33

But I think this week, Joe, Big Joe, with his big dog theory is going to be gunning after Johnathan for sure.

8:43

Can we can we talk about Joe for a second, though?

8:45

Absolutely.

8:46

We do like a big rugby player. Oh, my God. Big Joe, Big Joe.

8:50

But what I actually want to talk about him is did you see the TikTok video

8:56

of Joe Marler getting transformed into a drag queen?

8:59

Not just a drag queen, but a phenomenal drag queen.

9:02

Phenomenal. Like, he looked amazing.

9:04

Absolutely amazing.

9:05

I commented on the TikTok video that the makeup artist put up with Joe being transformed into a drag queen

9:12

and basically made a comment to say in a world so full of toxic masculinity,

9:17

Joe is a phenomenal role model for young guys.

9:20

And that has like I woke up and my phone had like over a thousand notifications.

9:26

Yeah, like that that comment that I put on really seemed to resonate with people.

9:31

But it's true. There's like in a world so full of the likes of Andrew Tate and Conor McGregor,

9:36

just absolute scumbags.

9:38

I think the antidote to those manosphere toxic influencers is people like Joe Marler.

9:46

Yeah. And do you know what?

9:47

It's funny because like when he first was on the Traitors, like I think I'm a very good judge of character.

9:52

And I was like, I bet he's a good egg.

9:54

And turns out he's also a good egg, but he's also an ally.

9:57

Yes. Love it.

9:59

And as much as we're loving Traitors at the minute, we are actually loving Drag Race España.

10:07

And?

10:08

Drag Race UK.

10:10

Yeah. So Drag Race is in full force.

10:13

Slaysian Royale.

10:15

There are so many franchises of Drag Race at the minute that it feels like a full time job keeping up with them.

10:23

Drag Race, Drag Race, Drag Race, Drag Race.

10:25

So we still have the last two episodes of Drag Race Philippines, Slaysian Royale to watch.

10:31

Which is phenomenal. Again, if anybody hasn't watched it yet, watch it. It is brilliant.

10:36

One of the lip syncs on that season is one of the best lip syncs I have seen on any franchise of Drag Race.

10:45

It is phenomenal.

10:47

Yes, I can confirm.

10:48

Definitely worth a watch.

10:50

But yeah, so what we're watching at the minute is Drag Race UK and Drag Race España.

10:56

And if you haven't watched any of Drag Race España, it's phenomenal.

11:00

Probably one of the best franchises out there.

11:03

And it's probably made because of the judging panel.

11:07

Supremme de Luxe.

11:09

Los Javis.

11:11

And Ana Locking.

11:13

Ana Locking.

11:15

Do you know my favorite thing about Drag Race España is that judging panel?

11:21

Because they make it what it is. They make it feel like a family.

11:25

They really care, they probably care deeply about the contestants.

11:30

Drag Race America, the main Drag Race is good, but I feel it's not commercialized as such,

11:38

but it's just that RuPaul just sometimes seems a little bit insincere in it.

11:41

Whereas with Supremme de Luxe, she actually feels those eliminations, doesn't she?

11:47

She cries. There's been a few episodes where we've cried before,

11:50

because it does feel like a family. It's amazing.

11:54

Yeah.

11:55

It's got something special.

11:56

It does. I don't know what it is.

11:59

I think if they could bottle that special sauce with Drag Race España

12:03

and sprinkle a little bit of it on the other franchises,

12:06

it would make them way better as well.

12:08

There is just a magic that they have managed to get on the Spanish version that is phenomenal.

12:14

And we love it.

12:15

And it's also helped us learn a little bit of Spanish, but more importantly, gay Spanish.

12:21

Because there's Spanish, and then there's gay Spanish,

12:24

and then there is Spanish, and then there's gay Spanish.

12:26

And the gay Spanish tends to be delivered the same way the gay people walk.

12:32

Fast.

12:35

Yes, it's very fast.

12:37

The other thing that is really good about it is the pit crew.

12:43

All right, true, we're talking about that.

12:47

Wait till I get sat up.

12:50

Two Doors Down reference there if anybody watches Two Doors Down.

12:54

The thing I love about the pit crew on Drag Race España is there's all body types on it as well.

13:00

There's everything from bears to little twinks on it.

13:05

And it's just, it's special.

13:07

Yeah, I think the diversity of the pit crew is what makes it really, really good

13:12

because there is like a broad spectrum of the gay community in there.

13:18

I mean, I don't think he has been on this season just yet,

13:21

but there is a trans guy who's on the pit crew as well.

13:24

And it's really phenomenal to have that kind of representation

13:28

because there are so many people I think can feel overlooked in our community

13:33

or forgotten about or not made to feel worthwhile

13:37

because they don't fit a certain aesthetic or they're not in with a certain crowd.

13:43

And for me, the thing I love about Drag Race España is what I look for

13:48

in any sort of gay community or space, which is that there is real diversity there.

13:54

There's lots of different types of people and it's not just,

13:58

and I'm not bashing them because they are their own thing,

14:02

but that kind of like circuit gay who it's all about body beautiful

14:06

and there's maybe a perception of aloofness there.

14:10

And we've also been watching Drag Race UK at the minute.

14:13

That's really good because we have a kind of a local queen taking part in that.

14:19

Yes, another Sparkles queen.

14:21

Another Sparkles queen, that is the Sparkles in the Yumbo.

14:24

That is the third.

14:27

Yes.

14:28

The Vivienne, which is where we first met the Vivienne in Sparkles

14:33

before she was on Drag Race.

14:35

Michael Maroulli, who worked in Sparkles and then in Ricky's.

14:39

And now Bonnie Ann Clyde.

14:41

Yes, she's done amazing.

14:43

Her Thursday was amazing.

14:45

You will know this.

14:46

I'm going to address the camera right now because by one of my favourite sitcoms of all time is Ab Fab.

14:53

I absolutely adore it.

14:54

And for them to do an episode dedicated to it was amazing.

14:59

But what topped it for me was Bonnie Ann Clyde's Runway

15:02

because my favourite, favourite quote from that series ever is

15:06

Thursday.

15:09

It just gets me.

15:10

That was uncanny.

15:11

Yeah, it was uncanny.

15:12

I don't know why.

15:13

I just think it's so stupid.

15:15

It's so silly and it's so my humour.

15:17

And for Bonnie Ann Clyde to come out in that runway to not only do that,

15:21

but to get it so spot on.

15:24

She had the replica outfit.

15:26

It was created with passion, clearly, because it was so well done.

15:31

She deserved that win.

15:33

That was phenomenal.

15:34

Spoiler alert.

15:37

Yeah, but maybe we should have said at the start it was going to be spoilers for everything.

15:41

Yeah, it was a really, really good episode.

15:45

Loving the UK series, as always.

15:47

What's the season?

15:48

Seven.

15:49

Seven.

15:50

That's mental that there's been seven seasons of the UK one.

15:54

As somebody who has watched Drag Race since season one of the US,

15:59

I remember all those years ago when it first started going back nearly two decades now,

16:06

I used to have to download it from dodgy torrent websites because you could not get it.

16:13

There was no UK broadcaster for Drag Race for a long time.

16:17

You couldn't get it on streaming services.

16:19

And the only way you could watch it from the UK was to watch it on some dodgy website or to download it illegally.

16:27

So I have legitimately been watching Drag Race since season one went out

16:33

and it is incredible to see how much it's evolved and it's become an empire that has launched so many careers

16:41

and it's furthered the gay agenda.

16:45

Yes, and anything that helps that is a win in my book.

16:49

Yeah, sequins and glitter is the real gay agenda.

16:52

So we obviously found out this week that Manchester Pride has unfortunately went into liquidation,

17:02

which is a real shame.

17:04

It being one of the biggest prides in the UK.

17:08

This year we have seen quite a few different pride organisations come into trouble, particularly financial trouble.

17:16

This week we saw Manchester Pride go into liquidation, which is a huge hammer blow for the community.

17:23

Manchester has always been such a gay mecca.

17:27

It's got a really vibrant scene.

17:30

It's where Queer as Folk was set originally.

17:34

And sorry to interrupt, but gays of a certain age, our age, Queer as Folk has such a special place.

17:42

Watching it in your bedroom with the volume down, hoping that your mum or your dad or whoever would not walk in

17:50

watching it because it was so ahead of its time at the time as well.

17:57

Hang on, I'm going to put my granddad outfit on and go before the internet.

18:03

Before the internet we didn't really have representation, we didn't see a lot of this stuff.

18:09

And Queer as Folk was a revelation.

18:12

I remember watching it as a young gay guy in Belfast closeted.

18:17

Not really knowing or being able to come to terms with my own feelings.

18:21

I'm watching it and suddenly I did not feel quite so alone anymore.

18:26

And the first time I ever took a trip to Manchester and set foot in Canal Street, it was like a pilgrimage.

18:35

It really did mean something to me.

18:37

If you've got any kind of link or association with Manchester, you've ever been there for a night out,

18:44

this news about Pride going into administration is really tough news.

18:49

Going to Manchester is like a rite of passage for gay guys our age because again, watching Queer as Folk

18:57

and seeing that and actually thinking, oh my god, this little bubble that you live in.

19:02

Because a lot of gay guys, they grew up in small towns like you grew up in Belfast.

19:06

I grew up just outside of Glasgow and you think that that is your life.

19:09

You don't realize that all this kind of stuff is happening.

19:12

So then when you see things like that on TV and then you travel somewhere like that and experience it,

19:18

it's really foundation memories that you have of first time being gay, first time going out,

19:25

going to the clubs, going to the bars.

19:27

So it's really, really sad.

19:29

So obviously they've been into voluntary liquidation and we don't know the ins and outs of it.

19:34

But in my opinion, is it that maybe Pride has just become a bit too commercial nowadays

19:40

and it needs to go back to the roots of being a protest.

19:44

Yeah, it's great and it's fun and in a few weeks we're going to be going out to Winter Pride here

19:48

and having lots and lots of fun.

19:50

But the message is always Pride as a protest first.

19:54

Absolutely. There's nothing wrong with going to Pride and having a party at Pride.

20:00

It's brilliant that we can do that because we have the freedom to party openly and be ourselves.

20:05

That is part of the protest as well.

20:07

It's about living freely without inhibitions and without feeling that we need to hide anymore.

20:13

But it can't just be a party.

20:16

It has to be more than that.

20:17

It has to be about pushing for equal rights.

20:21

And especially today when rights are starting to be rolled back.

20:26

I think we have seen quite a lot of corporations turn their backs on us

20:32

because of pressure from the likes of Donald Trump.

20:35

Definitely this year, more than others, fewer organisations were making small gestures

20:43

like putting rainbows on their social media avatars.

20:48

It was noticeable and we are definitely seeing less corporate funding being put towards LGBTQIA causes.

20:58

I don't know if that had anything to do with what's happened with Manchester.

21:02

I know certainly other Prides, that has been a factor for them.

21:06

We really do need to get back to our roots here.

21:08

It needs to be community focused.

21:11

It needs to be community orientated at all times.

21:14

And we need to realise that this is getting serious now.

21:19

Absolutely.

21:20

And we spoke about it during the week as well, about the artists that haven't been paid.

21:25

They support the LGBTQIA community year in, year out.

21:32

And for them to show up and support us and then not get the reward from that is really heartbreaking.

21:38

So hopefully something will happen with that as well that they get what they deserve.

21:43

It is a really bad state of affairs and I really hope that it focuses minds.

21:50

I hope we start seeing more people join the boards of their local Prides,

21:54

start to get involved in organisation and fundraising and awareness and all of these things

21:59

so that we can really get that sense of community back at Prides.

22:05

Shall we talk about those transphobes, Roisin, Murphy and JK Rowling?

22:09

Let's not talk about them too long because I don't want my blood to boil.

22:12

Yes, they don't deserve our time to be honest.

22:14

No.

22:15

But again, there's an artist that has made her career on the back of the queer community

22:20

and she has just completely turned her back on us.

22:24

Roisin Murphy has gone full MAGA.

22:26

Yes.

22:27

She is sharing MAGA propaganda, showing, and for those who don't know,

22:32

she shared a graph which supposedly demonstrates that fewer and fewer people are now identifying as queer.

22:41

And that is on the back of a complete clampdown by the very far right US administration.

22:49

And so it's no surprise that fewer people are identifying because they are scared to identify themselves

22:55

for fear of backlash, for fear of what this administration is going to do.

22:59

But she's putting out there that it's some sort of gotcha

23:02

because her and all her little terfy pals are fighting their case and their corner.

23:09

And that actually is just like you said.

23:11

People are too scared to now identify as queer, trans, non-binary, whatever it might be.

23:17

Totally. And you could not put a fag paper between TERFs and racists at the minute

23:23

because they are one and the same.

23:25

This proves it.

23:26

The MAGA agenda that we're seeing play out in America,

23:29

they're coming after queer people, they're coming after immigrants.

23:32

We've seen ICE agents do horrific things.

23:36

You sent me a video yesterday of a blind guy being picked up by ICE and dragged.

23:46

It made me feel sick when I watched it.

23:48

It was just unbelievable.

23:50

I actually couldn't believe my eyes.

23:52

This guy was sitting on the ground peacefully protesting

23:56

and they picked him up and dragged him along the ground,

24:00

banging his head off the ground and took him into I think it was an ICE facility.

24:04

I can't really tell from the video, but I'm actually lost for words because it's so scary.

24:11

Anybody who doesn't agree with the administration's agenda

24:14

is getting labelled as Antifa and as a terrorist.

24:18

And we're seeing people who do not have white skin being rounded up,

24:26

being thrown into what are essentially concentration camps without any due process.

24:31

Some people are being deported to countries that they've never been to before.

24:35

And it really is the case of first they came for the immigrants.

24:39

Because who are they going to go after next?

24:42

Exactly.

24:43

They're clearly going to come after trans people.

24:47

Then once they've been able to do that, they're going to come after the rest of the rainbow family.

24:52

And what happens in America then comes over to the UK, doesn't it?

24:58

It's really worrying.

24:59

Super, super scary.

25:01

And the amount of people that I recently have blocked on social media

25:08

because there's LGBTQIA people and this blows my mind that are supporting Reform

25:15

is just...

25:17

I can't wrap my head around...

25:20

Flabbergasted.

25:21

Flabbergasted.

25:22

Tom Daley would not like you at all.

25:24

Yeah, I can't get my head around anybody who is gay, lesbian, bi, trans,

25:32

whatever part of the queer spectrum that you occupy.

25:36

I can't get my head around you voting against our interests.

25:40

It is scary.

25:42

Yes.

25:43

Take a hard look at yourself.

25:45

Take a hard look.

25:47

There's a wee Glasgow phrase.

25:49

Take a hard look at yourself.

25:51

I will say though, we are sitting here in Gran Canaria, very lucky to be here.

25:58

And we can walk down the street holding hands and not bat an eyelid.

26:01

So we are sitting from a place of privilege at the moment.

26:04

I do need to say that because before we left Glasgow,

26:07

so Derec and I have been together eight years.

26:10

Eight long years.

26:13

And when we first started seeing each other,

26:15

we'd walk about Glasgow holding hands, absolutely no bother.

26:19

But probably a couple of years before we left,

26:22

we wouldn't do it because we just felt that shift.

26:26

And we would feel uncomfortable doing it in Glasgow city centre.

26:29

Glasgow on the whole is quite an accepting city, I would say.

26:33

But we experienced homophobia a few years back.

26:36

We'd just finished lunch.

26:37

We're up the West End, which is a really nice area of Glasgow.

26:40

We were holding hands, crossing the road.

26:42

And a guy in a van started hurling some abuse at us.

26:46

And of course, me bringing in my five foot five Scrappy Doo energy,

26:49

wanted to start a fight with him.

26:52

Because you know, you need to fight back.

26:54

Let's go back to that thing about Pride being a protest.

26:56

We need to fight back.

26:57

We need to show people that the more you push us,

27:00

the more we're going to push back.

27:01

Yeah, but you can fight back and you can stand up for yourself.

27:05

But you will know after that incident,

27:08

and it was a hate crime incident that we experienced,

27:13

we didn't freely just hold each other's hands in the street anymore.

27:16

We always looked over our shoulders first

27:18

to see who was around before we held hands.

27:20

So that incident changed how we behaved.

27:23

And it really annoyed me that that changed us.

27:27

Yeah, yeah.

27:28

And that I felt that I had to do that.

27:30

And that's just like we experienced that on a small scale.

27:33

Now fast forward to now and everything that's happening in the world

27:37

against queer people.

27:39

Like I'm sure lots more people experience worse things than we do.

27:42

So yeah, let's stick together.

27:46

There are forces at play who want to divide us.

27:49

There are forces who quite openly, every single day on social media,

27:53

are posting images showing the TQ being cut off, the LGBTQ,

27:59

trying to make it LGB.

28:02

This idea that the trans people and queer people

28:07

are not part of the lesbian, gay and bisexual community.

28:10

And it is absolute nonsense as I have been out for a very, very long time.

28:15

I've always been involved in the queer community wherever I've lived.

28:19

It has always been for me just a melting pot

28:23

because there is so much intersectionality.

28:26

I think as a rainbow community,

28:28

we need to remember that all the people that fought for our rights before us

28:33

and actually a lot of those people were actually trans people

28:36

that stood up and started the riots,

28:38

started the protests,

28:41

and we're able to sit here on our couch in Gran Canaria because of them.

28:46

We stand on the shoulders of giants

28:49

and quite a lot of trans people who have gone out there

28:53

and put it on the line to fight for our rights.

28:56

So we owe it.

28:58

We absolutely owe it to fight for everybody's rights here.

29:03

So how's your week been in the gym?

29:06

My week has been great because the gym we go to is full of talent.

29:12

The gym that we go to is full of Spanish talent.

29:15

I was going to say, yeah, not just talent, but Spanish talent.

29:17

Yeah, I know.

29:18

The gym that we go to, there are a lot of very beautiful people.

29:23

It makes you feel very humble.

29:25

Yes, yes.

29:26

If anybody has been to Gran Canaria,

29:29

specifically Maspalomas,

29:31

it's Titan Gym down in Meloneras.

29:34

It's a brilliant gym.

29:35

If you're ever coming over and you need a gym,

29:37

we'll always recommend you because it is a top notch gym.

29:42

But apart from the talent, my week in the gym has actually been very, very good.

29:47

I started a couple of weeks ago a new upper-lower full body push-pull program,

29:53

and it's going very well.

29:55

I am seeing a strength increase quite a bit over the past few weeks as well.

30:00

It's two weeks from tomorrow until the start of Winter Pride.

30:06

So it's nice to have that target because you want to feel confident.

30:12

I don't particularly go to the gym specifically for the aesthetics of it,

30:17

but that is a nice bonus.

30:20

I like what I see in the mirror and that gives me some confidence.

30:24

It puts a little extra pep in my step.

30:27

So having that target of Maspalomas Winter Pride to attend,

30:32

to feel like my best self is really, really good,

30:36

it's pushed me a little bit too.

30:38

Confidence is different for everyone.

30:40

It could be that you want to feel confident in your clothes.

30:43

It could be that you want to feel confident when you're on the nude beach.

30:47

It's different for everyone.

30:50

I think we've had a good focus the past few weeks with our health and fitness.

30:55

And for me especially, I am a lover of routine.

30:58

And when I'm out of routine, that really, really affects me.

31:01

I know.

31:04

So knowing that Winter Pride was coming up, I was like,

31:09

this many weeks, which means I'll get this many gym sessions in,

31:12

and it really, really helps with my mental health.

31:14

If I am out of a gym routine for any more than a couple of weeks,

31:19

I'm a nightmare to live with.

31:21

I know.

31:23

So I, on the other hand, opposites do attract because I am a creature of chaos.

31:28

Yes.

31:29

Pure chaos and uncertainty.

31:30

I know.

31:32

Not that I thrive without a routine.

31:35

I just find it very difficult because I have got diagnosed ADHD.

31:40

I've got quite severe ADHD.

31:43

And so for me, there are times in my life where I have the routine

31:47

and everything runs perfectly and it's great

31:49

and all the plates are spinning perfectly.

31:52

And then one by one, they start to crash down and that routine is gone.

31:58

You know how much I struggle with this.

32:02

And I think it's quite important to talk about it today.

32:05

I wanted to talk about it on the podcast

32:07

because I have had a really difficult couple of months.

32:11

So you know that since we moved here,

32:14

it's been difficult for me because I've lost my primary care in the UK.

32:20

Since we moved here, I didn't have access to my medication and things.

32:23

So it's been really, really difficult.

32:25

But as of this week, I am medicated again.

32:28

Yes.

32:29

And you're very happy about that.

32:30

Yes.

32:31

So do you know what, I actually have them here.

32:33

So this is, these are my magic pills.

32:35

These are my Concerta.

32:38

It's methylphenidate, slow release.

32:41

I take one in the morning and then for the next 12 hours, I am a normal human being.

32:45

Do you know what?

32:46

It's been great this week because I do the morning dog walk with Haggis

32:50

and I've came back and Derec has been basically on his hands and knees

32:54

cleaning the place with a toothpick.

32:57

And that is no word of a lie.

33:00

Alan comes back to a clean house in the morning.

33:03

Alan came in and found me and I was on my hands and knees at the shower

33:08

because there were, it just wasn't clean enough.

33:11

So I was using a toothpick to do some detailed cleaning in the shower.

33:15

And I had a stark realization about how bad my ADHD had gotten unmedicated

33:20

when that was what I was doing medicated.

33:23

There's a little insight to my life.

33:25

Yeah, but it has been good.

33:27

It's been a sudden change this week.

33:30

It's not been all plain sailing, but I feel like I am getting back to where I was again.

33:37

I feel like I'm getting back properly into a regular gym routine

33:41

that I am able to bring a little more structure to my life and a little less chaos.

33:49

Yeah, you're getting back to Derec.

33:51

Getting back to the best version of me.

33:53

Yeah, it has been great.

33:55

It's been good that that difference in you this week has been crazy.

33:59

Particularly as somebody who works in the fitness industry,

34:02

I feel this pressure to be a certain way and for people to see me a certain way.

34:07

And there is a sense of shame that comes along with not being this super disciplined fitness guy.

34:15

I think though that we put that pressure on ourselves.

34:18

Yeah, true.

34:19

It's a little bit of imposter syndrome as well sometimes.

34:22

True, because we fall into that trap of comparison

34:26

when we see other fitness professionals on Instagram, social media,

34:31

and then we compare ourselves to them, you know, which is very unhealthy.

34:35

And we tell our clients not to compare themselves to other people, you know,

34:39

but as humans, we do it, don't we?

34:42

I think that's why it's really important to talk about this

34:45

and to give the raw, unfiltered version of what my life is like with ADHD.

34:51

It's not all plain sailing.

34:53

It's not all meal prep at a certain time every week

34:59

and get to the gym at a certain time every day.

35:03

It just doesn't work like that for me.

35:05

I have accepted that and my life is better for coming to terms with that

35:11

rather than trying to push myself to be somebody that I am not.

35:14

Absolutely.

35:15

And I think that that's something that we coach with our clients as well,

35:19

because it's not realistic to expect somebody who is living a busy life,

35:26

who has multiple commitments, who has perhaps medical issues,

35:30

to be in the gym sometimes, you know, five, six times a week

35:33

with a really intense program and a really strict diet.

35:36

It doesn't always work.

35:37

That's for some people, it's not for everybody.

35:39

Yeah.

35:40

And like I mentioned earlier on,

35:41

like that new push-pull upper-lower full body that I'm doing,

35:44

I'm lucky enough that being self-employed,

35:46

I can pick and choose when I work and I can go to the gym and do that,

35:49

but that doesn't work for everyone.

35:50

You know, you need to find what works for you.

35:53

And I always say to clients, especially new clients that come on board,

35:57

you tell us what you can do and we'll build that around what you can do.

36:02

I say you need to be in the gym X amount of times,

36:04

because if you can't do it, you won't stick to it and then you'll hate us.

36:07

Yeah.

36:08

You do, well, this week anyway,

36:11

you have really benefited from having a live-in cleaner.

36:14

Yeah, it has been nice actually.

36:16

Giving you a bit more time in the gym, less for you to do.

36:19

It's been quite nice actually.

36:23

So this is something that we want to do as a regular segment in the podcast,

36:29

which is talk about things that we've seen on Reddit,

36:34

particularly some of the fitness Reddit stuff.

36:37

There was a post that I saw this week that I loved

36:41

and I wanted to read some of this out and to share it and to chat about it,

36:46

because I think it will really help some people,

36:48

particularly people who are beginners

36:50

or who suffer from some sort of anxiety going to the gym.

36:54

And can I just preface this with,

36:56

we also suffer anxiety going to the gym as well.

36:59

Sometimes, like I was saying, the gym that we go to,

37:01

it's kind of like a semi-professional bodybuilding gym

37:04

and everyone that's in there, all the guys, all the women,

37:10

they are all absolutely stunning.

37:12

And if we take a break from the gym, even for a couple of weeks,

37:15

we feel quite anxious getting back into it as well, don't we?

37:19

So even though we are fitness professionals,

37:23

we also get anxious going to the gym as well sometimes.

37:27

You know what it's like if you go down to the free weight section

37:30

and there's Big Muscle Marys there,

37:32

you're like, I'm not going anywhere near that?

37:34

For us, we know better.

37:36

We know to kind of talk ourselves out of that

37:38

because we've been doing it for so long.

37:40

But it still does, it can be an intimidating place.

37:43

I think especially for queer people, the gym can be an intimidating place.

37:48

Absolutely, absolutely.

37:50

But there are ways around it.

37:52

I think you have to push yourself out of your comfort zone

37:56

and you have to keep pushing yourself out of your comfort zone.

37:58

And when you keep doing it consistently over time,

38:01

it becomes less and less intimidating.

38:04

And I think what you're just about to read

38:06

kind of hits the nail on the head for that point.

38:10

This post is in r/beginnerfitness

38:13

and it's titled, "For those afraid to go to the gym, please don't".

38:18

I'm going to bring this closer because my eyes aren't what they used to be.

38:21

She old.

38:23

For those afraid to go to the gym, please don't.

38:25

I went for the first time today.

38:28

Just some slight encouragement,

38:30

mostly for people scared to go to the gym

38:32

because everyone else will laugh at this.

38:36

Six or seven weeks ago,

38:37

I finally started to do something to lose weight,

38:40

be in a deficit, walk more, et cetera.

38:43

But this time I wanted to do it properly.

38:45

So I also started to eat more protein

38:48

and thought about strength training.

38:50

Amazing. All very good so far, yeah.

38:52

I thought about the gym, but hell no.

38:54

As a total couch potato, introvert,

38:56

over 40 year old, obese dude,

38:59

can you imagine stepping foot in the gym

39:01

filled to the brim with young fit people,

39:03

power lifters and whatnot?

39:05

What would I even do there?

39:06

Probably just be awkward.

39:07

Try to do some stupid ****

39:09

and end up in a funny gym fails compilation on YouTube.

39:13

But I still wanted to do some training.

39:15

So what I did was bought a pair of adjustable dumbbells.

39:19

Two dumbbells up to 10 kilograms each

39:22

should be good for a couple of months, right?

39:24

No. I ran out of weight in like two weeks.

39:27

Amazing.

39:28

And that is what it's all about.

39:30

It's about that progress.

39:31

10 kilograms isn't really much,

39:34

not even for a total beginner.

39:36

So I bought additional plates

39:38

so I could have two times 20 kilos,

39:40

but I still ran out of weight in three weeks.

39:43

Brilliant.

39:44

So they go on to say that

39:46

they realized they needed to go to the gym.

39:49

I thought about it for a couple of days

39:50

and finally got myself together to go to the gym.

39:53

Fine. I'll be a laughing stock. So be it.

39:57

Holy ****. It was not what I expected.

40:00

Turned out that the gym was massive

40:02

with maybe 25 people in it.

40:05

Loads and loads of very weird machines,

40:07

benches, weights,

40:09

just insane amount of everything.

40:11

Zero scary power lifters

40:13

or ultra fit influencers.

40:15

Literally no one cared about me

40:17

or even looked at me.

40:19

Some girls watching YouTube on treadmills,

40:21

some skinny teenagers trying to lift.

40:23

One absolute unit of a dude.

40:25

They just went in,

40:26

bench pressed some ridiculous weight

40:28

and bailed.

40:29

One older guy trying some light calisthenics done.

40:33

And they go on to say that

40:35

they had lots and lots of fun.

40:37

They'd been back and

40:39

it just was not what they had

40:41

built it up to be in their head.

40:43

I love that because

40:45

it's the fear of the unknown

40:48

that's stopping people from going to the gym sometimes.

40:51

And that person there has just

40:54

quashed that by saying

40:56

it was absolutely fine.

40:57

I say to clients all the time

40:59

when you go in the gym,

41:00

if you're worried about going to a new gym

41:02

or starting a gym,

41:03

when you get there,

41:04

have a look around,

41:05

people are doing one of three things normally.

41:07

Working out,

41:08

doing their exercise,

41:10

checking themselves out in the mirror

41:12

or they're on their phone.

41:13

Alan checks himself out in the mirror quite a lot.

41:16

In between gym exercises.

41:18

Yeah.

41:19

No, absolutely, absolutely.

41:21

When you take the time to stop and look around,

41:24

you realize that's actually what the gym is

41:26

and what we spoke about previously

41:28

about all of these really beautiful people

41:31

with amazing bodies in our gym.

41:33

They're not looking at anybody else.

41:35

They are just getting on with their workouts.

41:38

And do you know what?

41:39

Sometimes I find it quite inspiring in our gym

41:41

because it's like,

41:43

well, that's maybe a level that we could potentially get to.

41:46

Because there are a lot of big, big guys in there.

41:50

Don't want to be that big,

41:51

but it's kind of like a next level thing

41:55

surrounding yourself by people that inspire you

41:58

is really true.

41:59

Totally, totally it is.

42:01

You could feel that you'll never get to that stage,

42:04

but it really is just about consistency.

42:06

You keep going, you keep going, you keep going.

42:08

You do what you need to do.

42:10

And eventually you look back and you'll think,

42:12

God, I've come so far.

42:14

Yes.

42:15

The big goal is always the big goal.

42:17

It's the small steps that get you there

42:19

that are the most important.

42:21

And I always say to clients as well,

42:23

progress photos, for example,

42:24

this is a really good, good example.

42:27

When clients first come to us,

42:29

they're always really scared

42:30

to take their first progress photos.

42:32

And I totally get it.

42:34

I understand that a hundred percent.

42:36

However, you will kick yourself

42:38

if you do not take your first progress photo.

42:41

Because see, when you take your last progress photo,

42:44

the comparison is unbelievable.

42:46

And you need to look back to see how far you've come.

42:50

I think most people can relate to a time

42:52

when they have had some personal change

42:56

in their lives, some physical change.

42:58

And it's not until you bump into somebody

42:59

that you haven't seen for maybe six months

43:02

and they see the difference in you

43:04

that you can't see yourself.

43:06

And that's what progress photos are for.

43:08

It's so that you can look at both side by side

43:10

and literally be that stranger and say,

43:13

Oh, you've changed.

43:15

I think that's probably one of the best

43:18

job satisfaction feelings that I get

43:21

when doing this job for people

43:23

is when they look at their photos

43:25

and they see the difference.

43:27

It's like, holy ****.

43:29

Yeah, holy ****.

43:30

Because you've put in that work.

43:31

Look at how different you are.

43:33

And I'm going to give a shout out

43:34

to one of our clients, Fraser,

43:36

who has had an unbelievable transformation.

43:41

He went out for his brother's birthday the other week.

43:45

He went shopping before it.

43:46

He bought himself new trousers,

43:47

a new shirt, a new jacket.

43:49

And he sent me the photo.

43:50

And I was like, holy ****.

43:52

You look absolutely unbelievable.

43:54

Like you look incredible.

43:56

And I hope that you can see that

43:58

and he could, which was great.

44:00

Good, good.

44:01

I think Fraser's transformation has been inspirational.

44:06

It really has.

44:07

For anybody watching this on YouTube,

44:09

we'll put some before and afters up

44:10

to show Fraser's transformation.

44:12

It has been just amazing to watch this guy

44:16

change from the inside out.

44:19

It's unbelievable.

44:21

I'm so proud of him.

44:22

And I know you are as well.

44:24

He is a totally different guy.

44:27

And he is so much more confident in the gym now.

44:30

Going back to the Reddit post,

44:32

it's that fear, it's overcoming that fear

44:35

of what people might think of you,

44:37

of what might happen in the gym.

44:40

And it always comes back to fear.

44:42

No matter what it is in life,

44:44

it always comes back to fear of something.

44:47

And it really is about overcoming that.

44:50

Yeah.

44:52

So I think we've maybe rambled on for long enough.

44:55

What do you think?

44:57

I think so.

44:58

Yeah.

44:59

So shameless plug coming up.
